Why stacked discounts don't simply add up

When a second discount is applied, it is calculated on the already reduced price. 30% off a 100 item gives 70; a further 10% off 70 is 7, leaving 63. The effective discount is therefore 37%, not 40%.

Tax is normally applied after discounts. In countries with VAT included in the shelf price you can leave the tax field at zero. Comparing the effective discount rate is the easiest way to judge which promotion is really the better deal.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount manually?

Multiply the price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the saving, then subtract the saving from the original price.

Is tax applied before or after the discount?

This calculator applies tax after discounts, which is the standard practice in most countries.

Can the discount exceed the price?

A percentage discount is limited to 100%, and a fixed discount larger than the price is flagged as an error.
